You've invested in authentic pashmina. Now don't ruin it.
Pashmina is delicate—but not fragile. With the right care routine, a ₹5,000 shawl outlasts five ₹1,000 synthetics. Your grandchildren will wear it.
This guide walks you through every care step. Follow it, and your shawl stays liquid-soft for 50+ years. Browse our Shawls Collection, Stoles Collection, and Gift Sets — each piece deserves this care.
Before First Wear: The Pilling Phase
New pashmina pills slightly. This is normal. This means it's genuine.
First two weeks:
- Gently brush with a soft bristle brush
- Brush in one direction only
- Pills will ball up and come off
- Repeat 2–3 times in the first two weeks
- After pills come off, the shawl is pristine
Pilling stops after 2–3 wears. It is proof of authenticity, not a defect.
Hand Washing: Step-by-Step
Supplies You'll Need
- Cool/lukewarm water (never hot)
- Gentle detergent (wool wash, baby shampoo, or diluted regular)
- Two bowls or a bathtub
- Soft towel
- Flat drying surface
Step 1: Prepare
Fill the tub with cool water. Add 1–2 teaspoons of gentle detergent and stir gently.
Step 2: Soak (5–10 minutes)
Submerge the entire shawl. Do not agitate—let it soak. The detergent works on its own.
Step 3: Gently Agitate (2–3 minutes)
Press the shawl against the bowl bottom. No wringing. No twisting. No scrubbing. Lift and lower gently.
Step 4: Rinse Thoroughly (3–4 rinses)
Drain the soapy water. Fill with cool clean water, submerge again, and repeat 3–4 times until the water runs clear.
Step 5: Remove Excess Water
Lift gently. Do not wring or twist. Gently squeeze out excess water, then lay on a clean towel. Roll up the towel to absorb moisture, then move to the drying step.
Washing Frequency
- Regular wear (2–3x/week): Wash every 4–6 weeks
- Occasional wear: Wash every 8–10 weeks
- Light wear: Spot clean as needed; full wash 2–3x yearly
Spot Cleaning (For Spills)
- Act quickly
- Mix cool water with a drop of detergent
- Dab (don't rub) the stain with a cloth
- Rinse with cool water
- Lay flat to dry
Drying: The Critical Step
Never hang pashmina to dry. Wet weight stresses and permanently stretches the fibers.
Correct method:
- After washing, squeeze gently to remove excess water
- Lay flat on a clean, dry towel
- Spread to natural dimensions
- Place in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight
- Air dry completely (12–24 hours)
- Flip halfway through if possible
- A fan nearby can speed drying (optional)
Why flat drying? Fibers relax and settle properly when laid flat. Hanging stretches them permanently. Never use heat—radiators and tumble dryers damage fibers irreversibly.
Seasonal Care
Spring/Summer Storage
- Wash thoroughly and dry completely before storing
- Store in a cool, dry place
- Use a breathable cotton bag (never plastic)
- Add cedar blocks or lavender sachets (never mothballs)
- Check monthly for moisture or pests
Fall/Winter Wearing
- Bring out 1–2 weeks before wearing to acclimate
- No special preparation needed
- Wash after the season ends before storing
Pilling Maintenance
Some fine pashmina may micro-pill years later (rare). If this happens, gently brush again with a soft bristle brush. Completely normal—it's the fiber settling further.
Repairs & Damage
Pilling: Brush gently with soft bristles.
Loose threads: Don't pull. Trim carefully with scissors.
Small holes: Take to a professional tailor with fine fiber experience. They can invisibly repair pashmina.
Stretching: If the shawl has lost its shape:
- Gently wash
- Lay flat while reshaping by hand
- Place light weights on the edges while drying
Permanent damage: Consider repurposing as a decorative wall hanging, cutting into smaller scarves, or donating to a textile restoration specialist.
Why Your Care Routine Matters
Properly cared-for pashmina will:
- Stay soft for 50+ years
- Improve with age (fibers settle and become softer)
- Become a family heirloom
- Cost ₹10,000–15,000 once vs. ₹2,000–5,000 annually on replacements
Poor care leads to worsening pilling, permanent stretching, loss of luster, moth damage, and mildew. The investment is worth protecting.
